Standards for General Practice Nurse Education and Practice

In recent years there has been a range of new educational developments for nurses moving into General Practice. The Queen’s Nursing Institute and QNI Scotland have therefore drawn up new Voluntary Standards for General Practice Nursing Education and Practice.

The new standards are focused on senior General Practice Nurses and have been designed to reflect the requirements of this role, working in new models of care and to reflect the rapid changes in the primary care environment.  They are not designed for nurses new to General Practice as there are a range of courses designed to equip nurses new to General Practice with the skills they need.

These standards seek to guide senior GPN clinicians, their employers and higher education institutions and will guide the development of courses to ensure they enable senior GPNs to meet the standards.For more information please visit the QNI website:

The plan (delivered nationally and regionally) is aimed at raising the profile of general practice nursing as a first destination career; improving access to training; increasing the number of pre-registration nurse placements and enhancing retention; supporting return to work schemes for practice nurses and developing a career pathway for GPNs and HCSWs.
